Iowa apartment complex makes some units smoke-free

Sun Prairie and Vista Court Apartments in West Des Moines, which are next to each other, have 40 buildings and nearly 1,100 apartments.

Owner Keith Denner says nine buildings, or 25 percent of the units, will be smoke-free.

Denner says he starting thinking about it last year as the Legislature took up a no-smoking bill for all public buildings, including workplaces, bars and restaurants. The law took effect last summer.

Denner says residents who smoke will be given the option to quit smoking in their apartments or move to one of the other buildings where smoking is allowed.
